FSSAI to issue license for Big food retailers

The Food Safety & Standards Authority of India, central food regulatory authority in the country, has finalized a license for multinational and Indian food retail chains that operate across various states in the country.
Currently, food retail chains are obtained licenses either from civic bodies or state governments.
The change is one of the key regulations in the draft on an integrated food safety & licensing policy finalized recently by the authority.
According to the draft regulation, to get a license certain preconditions on safety, sanitary and hygiene standards have to be met.
The aim is to target food services which have a high potential of contamination and hazard. For petty food businesses registration with the authorities at the state level will be necessary. Licensing from the central authority will be required for large businesses, it is learnt
