Butter Shortage due to less supply from Amul


Amul dairy has reduced production of regular fat butter by 25% . This shortage could not be covered up its major competitor Britannia , Mother Dairy .Branded butter s market is around 16000 tonnes and Rs1000crore in value .Amul has a market share of 90%.

Reasons which could have led to this situations are



  • Poor monsoon has resulted in low supply of milk

  • People turning to branded butter after major news on adulterated ghee and butter

  • Festival season which start from August and ends only after New year celebrations has caused huge demand on butter manufacturer .

  • Normal increase in demand for butter as spread for rotis , parathas , bread etc .

SIL launches new products in fruit beverages

Sil has announced recently launch of four fruit beverages namely -Happily Appily, Orange Oye, Mango Fantasy, and Fruit Fusion. These would be packed in tetra pack 1 ltr cap and with price tags Rs69/-.Sil brands gets in name from company name Scandic Food India Pvt. Ltd. (Scandic) . Its subsidiary of Danish company called DKK Good food group which has presence in 65 countries with manufacturing base of 11 factories . Good food group is a major brand in Scandinavian countries. In India they have operations since 1952 .

Kraft Food Cost Reduction Strategies

Kraft Foods Inc has initiated number of steps to reduce cost through procurement initiatives .
Few of them would be
  • Leverage scale with reduced number of strategic suppliers across total spend .
  • Expand global sourcing and low-cost country sourcing .
  • Simplify material and product specifications while maintaining quality .
  • Re-engineer processes to reduce inventory

CPO Ms Julia Brown gave details to the reporter s on cost reduction initiatives taken by Kraft Food Inc . She told that every spend category would be reviewed and supplier base consolidated . More of the items would be bought for the manufacturing through central buying team rather local buying .

Other cost reduction initiatives are

  • Reducing its cash conversion cycle from 46 days in 2008 to 41 days by 2011 .
  • Reducing overhead as a percentage of net revenue from 14% in 2008 to 12.5% in 2011 .
  • Focus on category value chains, manufacturing platforms .
  • Remove bottlenecks .
  • Reduce waste .
  • Optimize labor .
  • Streamline inventory .
  • Cover more than 30 category value chains across geographies over next two years

Government has asked Major FMCG to import sugar

Bulk consumer of sugar like Coca- Cola , Pepsico , Nestle , Cadbury , Britannia , Amul , Dabur has been asked by government to source their sugar requirement from imports from overseas country . With festive season starting from the last week of September with Dussehra ,Deepawali festival scheduled in coming months .Government is taking all necessary steps to prevent sugar prices spiraling out of control . Already limits on stocks has been put in place . In addition to that companies are allowed to import raw sugar tax free till December 2010.

India is the largest consumer of sugar as well as second largest producer of sugar after Brazil in the world . Due to shortfall in rains this year sugar production is likely to fall by 15.0 million tonnes . This all have inflated the price in international sugar market as well .

Government authorities have already started importing sugar in view of the shortage.

GreenPeace Red List have major fmcg companies in it

Britannia and Parle have been put into Green peace '' Red List '' for GM ( Geneticaly Modififed )food s . Other Fmcg companies mentioned in '' Red List '' are Nestle , Cadbury , Kellogs and Safal . Green Peace ''Safe List " on GM foods contains Haldiram , MTR,Dabur , ITC foods , Pepsico and Ruchi Soya .

The safety of GM crops as a foodstuff for animals and humans is unknown and the testing regimes are inadequate. Studies on lab rats show potential health risks including allergies, abnormal growth of liver and kidney and many unpredictable effects.

India to set up Food Safety Courts

FSSAI in its draft policy has proposed to set up food safety courts or tribunal to try offences such as death due to food borne disease and other food safety injuries . State government with concurrence of High court can set up such Food safety special courts . Such offence can draw punishment upto three years of imprisionment .

Branded products prefered by consumer

Recent poll conducted by bakerybazar has shown that people prefer branded bakery products over local product produced by small bakeries and they buy these products from retail shops . Votes for branded product were 77% where as for local or unbranded product was 23%. We can say that people are conscious about the quality of the product and their health.
